Insomnia - May 15, 2013

4:52 am

I don't know the lyrics to Time to Change by the Brady Bunch, but that doesn't stop it from playing in my head if I get woken up in the middle of the night.
What will happen is that I will hear the voices of those six people singing the lyrics to The Devil Went Down to Georgia.

4:59 am

Autumn turns to winter,[The Devil went down to Georgia,]And winter turns to spring.[He was looking for a soul to steal,]It doesn't go just for seasons you know, [He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind,] (check out the internal rhyme here) It goes for everything. [And he was willing to make a deal,]

5:00 am

I'm really only bringing this up in case one of you is a neurologist.

5:03 am

Fun fact: this song was written by three guys. Three. R Bloodworth, B Meshel, C Welch. I wonder if just one guy was in charge of the sha na na's, or if they all split those up equally.Bloodworth would be a good stage name for Alice Cooper's bass player.

5:06 am

Has there ever been a good song with the lyric "here's what you've got to do" leading into the chorus?

5:18 am

The Devil Went Down to Georgia is credited as being written by The Charlie Daniels Band, which makes sense. It seems like a community effort. It's got like two bridges and five lines that are essentially sung by a greek chorus. The line that really opened up this topic for me was 'sit down in that chair right there'. I thought the Hickory stump established that they were in the woods. So, hey? Why the chair? That's the first time I noticed the rhyme scheme. I hope that means that I'm thirty five years away from learning something awesome about some Bruno Mars song. (Could not think of the title of a single Bruno Mars song.)

5:23 am

What The Devil Went Down to Georgia really reminds me of is the youthful glee of hearing the phrase 'son of a bitch' on the radio. A joy that would have seemed pretty tame if anyone my age had known what the song Afternoon Delight was about.

5:32 am

I also remember that Charlie Daniels didn't play fiddle at the Grammys or some show because he was wearing a cast. My dad told me that he had hurt himself while driving fence posts. I, who had always imagined my adulthood to be the End Of Yard Work, was crestfallen. That's the day the big dreams all started to fall apart."And if you wanna reach your destiny, here's what you've got to do...""Fire on the mountain - run boys, run..."
