Insomnia - January 15, 2014

2:04

2014 is probably going to be okay. We'll all probably muddle through and remain pretty much intact. But my optimism is shaken a little because I've just now been made aware that Alvin and the Chipmunks recorded a version of Coward of the County for their 1980 - something album Urban Chipmunk.

2:07

"Their" probably isn't the right word. These are pretend animals.

2:23

Yeahbutwellthenanyway, the article in Wikipedia assures us that they changed the lyrics. And to anyone remotely familiar with the song, that seems like a solid idea. Even though the late 70's version of what happened to Becky is kind of "oh look, her sleeve is ripped", it's really a stretch to imagine the Chipmunks anywhere near this.

And I'm hardly Quaker

2:25

Thing is, and I'm probably overreacting, I don't think they've really changed that dark, terrible aspect of the song. It seems like some dicey stuff went down.

2:37

When ABC ran Blazing Saddles as the Thursday Night Movie at some point around this time, they faced some editing challenges too. For instance, the scene where a little old lady responds to the sheriff's greeting with three words. "Up", "yours" and a third word that ABC would not come within thirty lightyears of airing in this age of Dancing With the Stars.

That night, however, they changed "up yours" to "out of my way" and left everything else untouched.

This is that.

2:42

What I'm implying is that you should go to (http://www.amiright.com/parody/70s/kennyrogers40.shtml) and maybe have a look. I shouldn't be trusted to see the sensible side of anything until I've had at least a solid fifteen minutes of sleep.

2:51

That's probably not even my biggest problem with Coward of the County. I think it's very dangerous idea that they're putting out there -- this concept that a young guy can suppress his anger for years at a time and then just unleash it like a bottle of White Tornado and kill three criminals.

2:54

Do they still make White Tornado? It's really like all the 1979 brain cells are just there in one clump.

2:56

"Up yours, White Tornado."

I'm sorry. I don't know why I think that's funny.

3:11

Here. This is literally what I thought Coward of the County was about.

Lyric as written:

Everyone considered him the coward of the county,
He never did a single thing to prove the county wrong.

My honest-to-God interpretation:

The entire county, maybe over a hundred thousand people, gathered in some official capacity and decided that this one dopey kid was the most cowardly person among them. They based their decision on the fact that when he attended council meetings he never brought forth any new legislative ideas that challenged the established bureaucratic machinery of the county government, which would have been paramount to "proving the county wrong".

I had a lot of anxiety about Social Studies during this period of my life.

I just noticed that the guy who wrote the parody lyrics has a maybe-Japanese name and that a bunch of these lyrics seem like twice-translated movie subtitles.

But he kept the phrase "they took turns with..".

Is there a Kidz Bop version of Cop Killer?
